Writing

The Writing Revolution (TWR) is an evidence-based approach to teaching writing that helps students express their thinking clearly and confidently. It gives students the tools and strategies they need to become effective writers in all subjects.

At our school, we are beginning to use this approach to strengthen how we teach writing across all year levels.

Writing is a complex skill that supports learning in every area of the curriculum. TWR breaks writing down into manageable steps, helping students:

  • Write clear, complete sentences.
  • Organise their ideas logically.
  • Use strong vocabulary.
  • Understand grammar and punctuation.
  • Communicate their thinking in all learning areas.

The approach is explicit, structured, and practical, so every student knows exactly what to do — and how to do it.

What Does It Look Like in the Classroom?

You might hear your child talking about:

  • Sentence work – building, expanding, and combining sentences.
  • Because, but, so – a tool to deepen thinking and explain ideas.
  • Planning tools – to help organise their ideas before writing.
  • Quick writes – short, focused writing tasks to build fluency.
  • Explicit instruction – direct teaching of grammar, structure, and style.

This structure helps all students, including those who find writing challenging.

How Can Parents Help at Home?

You don’t need to be a writing expert! Here are simple ways you can support your child:

✅ Ask your child to explain their thinking using full sentences.
✅ Use prompts like “Can you tell me more?” or “Why do you think that?”.
✅ Encourage your child to talk about what they are learning and write about it.
✅ Praise effort and progress — not just the final result.
✅ Read often — writing improves when children are exposed to rich vocabulary.
